Sandy Boulevard Streetscape

Portland, Oregon

Five distinct rain gardens collect stormwater along a 30-block stretch on NE Sandy Boulevard. Nevue Ngan Associates assisted URS Corporation and worked closely with Portland Bureau of Environmental Services, Portland Bureau of Transportation, and Portland Office of Urban Forestry to develop this unique streetscape plan that incorporates four large urban rain gardens and one stormwater garden plaza. The green street elements fulfill multiple purposes, including: reducing the frequency of combined sewer overflows (CSO), creating a stronger visual identity to the business district, and offering a safer pedestrian condition along one of Portland’s busiest corridors. The walls used to define the gardens along the corridor reflect the art deco architecture of the historic strip.
