Smith Memorial Student Union Plaza

Portland, Oregon

Portland State University’s Student Union Plaza is the first of SW Montgomery Street’s nine downtown Portland blocks to undergo a retrofit under a conceptual green street plan four decades in the making. The re-graded plaza funnels runoff into a prominent 5-foot wide “stormwater spine,” a unique identifying feature developed by Nevue Ngan Associates in the SW Montgomery Green Street Concept Plan. Water is collected throughout the University’s skybridge system and directed into landscaped planters where it infiltrates into the ground. Future improvements include draping multiple green walls on surrounding buildings.
