Bridgeton Trail

Portland, Oregon

This half-mile trail adjacent the Columbia River will serve as a promenade and pedestrian link for the rapidly developing Bridgeton neighborhood. A missing link in Portland’s 40-Mile Loop, the promenade acts as a front yard to future businesses and residential properties. Nevue Ngan Associates worked with the community, and local and federal agencies to overcome the challenges of a trail located on a regulated levee system.

Visually, the levee blocks the neighborhood’s view of the river, and structurally, the levee must protect the neighborhood from floodwaters. The trail design minimizes conflicts with a main route for bicyclists and a lower path for strolling. Eclectic features of the waterfront, including docks, boats, ramps and river pilings, mark gateways that connect the neighborhood to Bridgeton Trail.
