Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center
The Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center combines historic restoration with high environmental standards, achieving the first gold-rated LEED historic renovation in the nation. Nevue Ngan Associates assisted Holst Architecture, the project architect, in what has since earned the reputation of being one of Portland's early examples of urban stormwater management. All stormwater runoff from the building rooftop and parking lot is captured, cleansed, and infiltrated in a series of landscape bioswales. The native plantings, designed to adapt to the difficult urban conditions, continue to preform well. Espallied apples form the entry to the building to remind visitors that a city should be healthy enough to eat.
