Old Town / Chinatown 3rd & 4th Avenue Streetscape

Portland, Oregon

With the addition of the Portland Classical Chinese Garden, city leadership made the redevelopment of Chinatown a priority. With Nevue Ngan Associates' role in the development of the Garden, the City requested the firm to develop a streetscape plan to recognize and celebrate the unique cultural and historical origins of this Portland downtown district.

Nevue Ngan Associates assisted the Portland Development Commission and Portland Bureau of Transportation in an intensive, bilingual public outreach process that garnered input and support from the neighborhood. The concept plan illustrated physical improvements to the district's gateway entrance and right-of-ways to encourage future economic redevelopment. Improvements include the use of historic materials, curbless festival streets to accommodate special events, and art and commemorative plaques to celebrate history. Plantings feature a collection of trees and shrubs native to China that have significance in Chinese culture.
