Union Station - 6th Avenue Streetscape
Union Station has played a vital role in Portland's history. Unfortunately, the grand entry that was envisioned when the facility was originally designed more than 100 years ago was never implemented. The 6th Avenue Street Extension project provided the opportunity to create a historically appropriate front entrance plaza. The entry plaza now features a garden reminiscent of the Victorian era in period-specific plant species, brick paths and wrought iron fencing. The garden which is close to the warmer river microclimate, pushes the planting envelope with a collection of semi-tropical species. Working with Portland Development Commission, the project gained the support of the City’s Historic Design Review and Oregon’s State Historic Preservation Office.
